           cashews        time          rate in 
            eaten      in minutes     cashews/minute

Casey        56             x             56%2Fx

     To get the equation, use the first sentence in the problem:

            David's rate = Casey's rate + 3

                  80%2Fx%27%27=%27%2756%2Fx%27%27%2B%27%273       

Solve that for x and get x = 8 minutes

So David's rate is 80%2Fx=80%2F8=10 cashews per minute
So Casey's rate is 56%2Fx=56%2F8=7 cashews per minute
