the other number will be (8.5-x)

The product = x(8.5-x) =18
8.5x-x^2=18
multiply by 10
85x-10x^2=180
rearrange the terms
10x^2-85x+180=0
10x^2-40x-45x+180=0
10x(x-4)-45(x-4)=0
(x-4)(10x-45)
x= 4 OR x=4.5
both satisfy the condition
the numbers are 4 & 4.5
