let x be the number of 3 legged stools
the number of 4 legged stools will be y
..
x+y=161..............1
..
3x+4y=566............2
multiply equation 1 by 3 and subtract equation 2
3x+3y-3x-4y=483-566
-y=-83
y=83
x+y=161
x+83=161
x=161-83
x=78 three legged stools
