Multiply the number of coins times the value of each coin and add the result. In this case, the total value is $6.75, so you have to either write the equation with decimals like this:
.10*d + .25*(d-3) =6.75
OR-- you can change the $6.75 to CENTS, and write it this way 675 cents:
10*d+25*(d-3)=675
