 Supplementary angles add up to 180 degrees
Let x = the measure of the larger angle
Smaller angle = x/3 + 17
Therefore:
x + (x/3 + 17) = 180
x + x/3 = 180 - 17
x + x/3 = 163
Get a common denominator
3x/3 + x/3 = 163
Now we can remove the denominator from the equation
4x/3 = 163
4x = 489
Divide both sides by 4
x = 122.250
Smaller angle = 180 - 122.5 = 57.50
