Find two numbers whose difference is 18 and 1/4 of whose sum is 9.
-----------------
Equations:
x + y = 9
x - y = 18 1/4
-------------------
Add the 2 equations and solve for "x":
2x = 27 1/4
----
2x = (4*27+1)/4
---
2x = 109/4
x = 109/8
---
x = 13 5/8
