An address book cover has a permiter of 14 inches, and a diagonal measurement of 5 inches. What is the length and width of the cover?

2X+2Y=14
2X=14-2Y
X=(14-2Y)/2
X^2+Y^2=5^2
[(14-2Y)/2]^2+Y^2=25
[(196-56Y+4Y^2)/4]+Y^2=25
[(196-56Y+4Y^2+4Y^2)]/4=25
(8Y^2-56Y+196)=4*25
8Y^2-56Y+196-100=0
8Y^2-56Y+96=0
8(Y^2-7Y+12)=0
8(Y-3)(Y-4)=0
Y-3=0
Y=3 ANS.
Y-4=0
Y=4 ANS.
PROOF:
2*3+2*4=14
6+8=14
14=14
