Question 251789: The difference between two numbers is 16. Five times the smaller is the same as 8 less than twice the larger. Find the numbers.
Answer by checkley77(12844)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Y-X=16 OR Y=16+X
5X=2Y-8
REPLACE Y IN THE SECOND EQUATION WITH (16+X) & SOLVE FOR X.
5X=2(16+X)-8
5X=32+2X-8
5X-2X=24
3X=24
X=8 THE SMALLER NUMBER.
Y=8+16=24 FOR THE LARGER NUMBER.
PROOF:
5*8=2*24-8
40=48-8
40=40
