Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A rectangular window is 10 inches longer than it is wide. If the area is 1200 square inches, find the length and width.
x^2+10=1200
x^2+10-1200=0
(x+?)(x-?)= (I don't know what to do here)
------------------------
If you cannot conveniently factor the quadratic you
can always use the quadratic formula.
x = [-10 +- sqrt(100 -4*1*-1200)]/2
---
x = [-10 +- sqrt(4900)]/2
x = [-10 +- 70]/2
x = [-10-70]/2 = -40
x = [-10+70]/2 = 30
---
Use the positive solution.
