1- how much does 3/4 of 12 exceed 1/2 of 7?
3/4*12=36/4=9
1/2*7=7/2=3.5
exceed means how much more is it.
We subtract 3.5 from 9
9-3.5=5.5
3/4 of 12 exceeds 1/2 of 7 by 5.5
2-a train travels at a rate of 1 mile in 40 seconds how many miles per hour does it travel
40 seconds is 2/3 of a minute since 40/60 =2/3
so it goes 1 mile in 2/3 of a minute
in one minute it goes 1.5 miles
multiply both by 3/2
1 mile times 3/2 = 1.5
2/3 times 3/2 equals 1
so it goes 1.5 or 3/2 miles in a minutes
but we want hours.
there are sixty minutes in an hour
3/2*60=180/2=90 miles an hour
3-a runner covers 3 feet with each pace, and the runner takes 200 paces per minute ,what total distance in feet will be covered in 3/4 an hour
3/4 of an hour =3/4*60
3*200=600 feet per minute
600*(60*3/4)=600*180/4=600*45=6*4500= 38(2*4500) =3*9000=27,000 feet
4-4. Lee and mike had a party. They divided the cake evenly between 4 people. One portion was divided equally among 3 children .how much cake did one of the children get.
This problem is poorly worded.
It first decides that each person (that is one people) receives one portion (one quarter of the cake -much too large a portion ) and that children aren't people.
so each adult receives one quarter of the cake.
so if 3 children share one adult portion we have 1/4 divided by 3=
so we have 1/4*1/3=1/12
1/12 of the cake for each child.
