A 300 cm string is cut into two pieces so that the second piece is 14 less than the first. How long is each piece.

Let the longer piece have length "x" cm
Then the shorter piece is "x-14" cm

Equation:
x + x-14 = 300
2x = 314
x = 157 cm (the longer piece)
x-14 = 143 cm (the shorter piece
