Question 224063: Variables on both sides.
Population of 2 towns... one town population of 25,500 increases by 2000 per yr. one town population of 47,900 decreases by 800 per year.
If the rate remains the same in what year will both populations be the same.
i need the verbal sentence as an equation and then solve (or I can). I am not sure if my equation is correct. I think the answer is 8 years. thank for your help.

Answer by nerdybill(7384) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Your equation:
25,500+(nx2000)=47,900-(nx800)
is correct.
.
However, it would be better written as:
Let n = number of years
then
25500 + 2000n = 47900-800n
.
Solving:
25500 + 2000n = 47900-800n
25500 + 2800n = 47900
2800n = 22400
n = 22400/2800
n = 8 years
