The definitions of the words job and join are on back-to-back pages in a dictionary. If the sum of those pages is 1,411, on what page can the definition of job be found?
Step 1. Let n be one page and n+1 be the next consecutive page.
Step 2. Let n+n+1 be the sum of the two page numbers.
Step 3. Then n+n+1=1411 since the sum is 1411 as given by the problem statement.
Step 4. Solving
Subtract 1 from both sides we have,
Divide 2 to both sides of the equation
and
Step 5. ANSWER: The pages are 705 and 706.
