Suppose a fuel mixture is 7% ethanol and 93% gasoline. How much ethanol (in gallons) must you add to one gallon of fuel so that the new fuel mixture is 10% ethanol?
-------------------------
Equation:
7%ethanol + 100%ethanol = 10%ethanol
0.07(1 gal) + 100%(x gal) = 0.10(1+x)gal
7 + 100x = 10(1+x)
7 + 100x = 10+10x
90x = 3
x = 0.0333.. gallons (amount of 100% ethanol that must be added)
