1] In a certain company,the ratio of the manager to the number of production-line workers is 5 to 72.If 8 additional production-line workers were to be hired,the ratio of the number of mangers to the number of production-line workers would be 5 to 74.how many managers does the company have?

In a certain company,the ratio of the manager to the number of production-line workers is 5 to 72.If 8 additional production-line workers were to be hired,the ratio of the number of mangers to the number of production-line workers would be 5 to 74.how many managers does the company have?

m/p = 5/72
72m = 5p
------------------
Add 8 to p
m/(p+8) = 5/74
74m = 5(p+8)
----------------------
Restate the equations:
72m -5p = 0
74m - 5p = 40
-------------------
Subtract the 1st Eq. from the 2nd and solve for "m":
2m = 40
m = 20 (# of managers)

Substitute to solve for "p":
5p = 72m = 72*20 = 1440
p = 288 (# of production workers)
