: Can you please solve question (b) for me? Here's the problem:
Below the cloud base, the temperature T (in F) at heigh h (in feet) can be approximated by the equation T=To - (5.5/1000)h, where To is the temperature at ground level. (a) Determine the air temperature at a height of 1 mile if the ground temperature is 70 degrees F. (b) At what altitude is the temperature freezing.
I'm not sure what number to plug in for "T", but the answer is 6909 feet. Thank you for any help! :)

Below the cloud base, the temperature T (in F) at height h (in feet) can be
approximated by the equation T = To - (5.5/1000)h,
where To is the temperature at ground level.
:
(a) Determine the air temperature at a height of 1 mile if the ground temperature is 70 degrees F.
To = 70
h = 5280 (1 mile in feet)
T = 70 -
T = 70 -
T = 70 - 29.04
T = 40.96 degrees at 1 mile
:
(b) At what altitude is the temperature freezing.
Assuming the surface temp is still 70, T = 32
32 = 70 -
32 - 70 = -
-38 = -
Write it;
= 38
5.5h = 38 * 1000
:
5.5h = 38000
h =
h = 6,909 ft, the temp is freezing, which is what you got, way to go!
