5x-2y=-10
5x-2(7+x)=-10
5x+14-x=-10
4x=24
x=-6

x=y+7
2x-5y=-10
2x-5(x-7)=-10
2x-5x+35=-10
-3x=-10-35
-3x=-45
x=15
y=8
Paul your solution is wrong because it says 5 times the smaller number is subtracted from two times the larger. y is the smaller number and x is the larger number . The reason for that is that y is 7 less than x.
