Question 198099: Please help me solve this problem.
When Bobby walks to school in the morning he walks 6 blocks north to pick up Carrie, then 10 blocks west to Andy'd house. From Andy's, they walk 4 block north to the school. There is also a direct path that Bobby could take from his house to school if he went alone. How many fewer blocks would he have to walk if he walked to school alone?

Imagine they're on the xy-plane, and they start off at (0,0)
6 blocks north puts them at (0,6)
10 blocks west puts them at (-10,6)
4 blocks north puts them at (-10,10)
The problem wants the length from (0,0)
to (-10,10)
The general formula is:

I'll say
(x1,y1) = (0,0)
(x2,y2) = (-10,10)

blocks
The 1st path was blocks

The direct path is 5.858 blocks shorter
