: In a two-canidate election 1401 votes were cast. If 30 voters had switched their votes from the winner to the loser, the loser would have won by 5 votes. How many votes did each canidate actually recieve? This question is from textbook algebra and trigonometry

Answer by ptaylor(2198)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=votes for the winner
Then 1401-x=votes for the loser
Soooooo:
(x-30)+5=(1401-x)+30 simplify
x-25=1431-x add x and also 25 to both sides
x+x-25+25=1431+25-x+x collect like terms
2x=1456 divide each side by 2
x=728--------------votes for the winner
1401-x=1401-728= 673-------------votes for the loser
CK
728-30+5=673+30 or
703=703
Hope this helps--ptaylor
