1. What number is 12% of 85?
Let n = the number
then
n = .12(85)
.
2. The sum of three consecutive odd numbers is 99; what are the numbers?
Let n = first of three consecutive odd numbers
n+2 = second of three consecutive odd numbers
n+4 = third of three consecutive odd numbers
.
n + (n+2) + (n+4) = 99
.
3. A woman buys four CDs for $52.92, including 8% sales tax. How much did each CD cost?
Let c = cost of each CD
then
4c + .08(4c) = 52.92
4c(1+.08) = 52.92
4c(1.08) = 52.92
