Question 191606: Problem: A company has 5 large buses and 6 small buses. A large bus holds 11 more people than the smaller one. If the capacity of all the uses is 495, how much does each size of bus hold?
I think that the equation is
I figured out that y = 40 so the small bus holds 40 people, which means that the large bus holds 51 people.
I just don't know how I made it work.

Answer by douger(3)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
people held by small bus = x
people held by large bus = people held by small bus + 11 = x+11
(5 large buses) + (6 small buses) = 495 people
5(x+11) + 6x = 495
5x+55+6x=495
11x+55=495
(subtract 55 from both sides)
11x=440
(divide both sides by 11)
x = 40
people held by small bus = x = 40
