: Mr. Wise bought $1950 worth of stock, some at $3.00 per share and some at $4.50 per share. If he bought a total of 450 shares of stock, how many of each did he buy?
I have tried to arrange this problem several ways and I still can't come up with the correct answer. I am probably just overthinking it. Can you please show the work you use to obtain the answer so I can see what I'm doing wrong in the set up?
Thanks,
Kim

Answer by jonvaliente(64)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x and y = no of shares bought
3x+4.5y=1950 (1)
x+y=450 (2)
Divide both sides of (1) by 3, we get:
x+1.5y=650
x+y=450
Subtract (2) from (1), we get:
0.5y=200
y=400
x+400=450
x=50
So Mr. Wise bought 50 of $3.00 share and 400 of $4.50 share
