Three chickens that weigh: x, y, z
:
x+y = 10.6
y = (10.6-x)
:
x+z = 8.5
z = (8.5-x)
:
y+z = 6.1
y = (6.1-z)
substitute (8.5-x) for z
y = 6.1 - (8.5-x)
y = 6.1 - 8.5 + x
y = (x - 2.4)

In the 1st equation, substitute (x-2.4) for y
x + (x-2.4) = 10.6
2x = 10.6 + 2.4
2x = 13
x =
x = 6.5 lb is the 1st chicken

6.5 + y = 10.6
