With the same amount of money, she could buy 5 more assessment books than if she chose to buy the reference books. Each reference book cost $8 and each assessment book cost $4. How much did she pay for the books.

You are told that
She could buy 5 Reference books or (5+5)=10 Assessment books.
In either case, she spends 8*5=40 OR 10*4=40
