Two trucks haul 126 m^3 of sand each taking 7 loads. They can move 138m^3 if
one truck takes 11 loads and the other truck takes 5 loads.
Find the capacity of each truck?
:
Let x = capacity of truck 1
Let y = capacity of truck 2
:
Write an equation for each statement:
:
"Two trucks haul 126 m^3 of sand, each taking 7 loads."
7x + 7y = 126
or
7y = 126 - 7x
Simplify by 7
y = (18 - x); use this form for substitution
:
" They can move 138m^3 if one truck takes 11 loads and the other truck takes 5 loads."
11x + 5y = 138
:
Find the capacity of each truck?
:
Substitute (18-x) for y in the above equation
11x + 5(18-x) = 138
:
11x + 90 - 5x = 138
;
11x - 5x = 138 - 90
:
6x = 48
x =
x = 8 cm/m capacity of truck 1
;
I'll let you find y, the capacity of truck 2
:
Check your solutions in the equation; 11x + 5y = 138
