Think of it this way
The possible numbers are 1 - 42. That means you have 42 different numbers you can choose from to start out.
When you pick you first number, it can be any one of those 42.
Now here is the tricky part, in a lottery they use litle balls with numbers on them. Once they pick one ball, they remove that ball from the possible picks for the next slot. This problem doesn't say if the numbers you pick must be used only once.
You'll need to ask your teacher on that.
Let's assume we can only use each number once. That means, once you pick that number, it no longer is in the pool of remaining numbers.
So, pick the first ball. You have 42 choices.
Pick the second ball. You have 41 choices
Pick the third ball. You have 40 choices. etc etc
Pick the sixth ball. You have 37 choices.
The possible combinations are the product
42*41*40*39*38*37
If it turns out that you CAN use the same number over, then the number of possible choices doesn't change with each previous choice.
In that case, then product would be 42*42*42*42*42
