Answer by Mathtut(3670)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let the compass and the ruler cost be c and r, respectively
:
c+r=4......eq 1
c=r+.9.....eq 2
:
take c's value of r+.9 from eq 2 and plug it into eq 1
:
r+.9+r=4
:
2r=3.10
:
$costs of rulers
:
from eq 2:c=r+.9$cost of compasses
:
1.55+2.45=$4.00
