Question 174172: A rectangle is twice as long as it is wide. If both its dimensions are increasd by 4m, its area is increased by 88m^2. Make a sketch and find the dimensions of the original rectangle.

Can't sketch.
AREA=LW
L=2W
(L+4)(W+4)-LW=88
(2W+4)(W+4)-2W*W=88
2W^2+12W-2W^2+16-88=0
12W-72=0
12W=72
W=72/12
W=6m. ANS. FOR THE WIDTH.
L=2*6=12m. ANS. FOR THE LENGTH.
PROOF:
(12+4)(6+4)-12*6=88
16*10=88+72
160=160
ORIGINAL DIMENSIONS ARE L=12 W=6.
