Question 161834: This word problem was given on a test. I don't remeber the exact wording of the problem but it was something like this. Find the change in feet per minute over 14 minutes between 3300 and 1200. The problem had something to do with moving from outside an airplane to the ground and the work was something like this.
-14x+3300=1200
-3300 -3300
-14x/-14=-2100/-14
x=150
I'm not sure why, but I know the 14 was definitely negative. When I got my paper back, the question was corrected and said it should have been -150 feet per minute because the person was moving towards the ground. Can you have a change in negative feet per minute or would the change still be considered a positive change in a negative direction? I am in ninth grade and am taking honors algebra 1. Please answer as soon as you can.

Answer by checkley77(12844)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
-14x+3300=1200
IF this is the equation then 150 is the answer.
HOWEVER: IF the 14x is positive then the answer is -150.
Proofs:
-14*150+3300=1200
-2100+3300=1200
1200=1200
--------------------------------
14*-150+3300=1200
-2100+3300=1200
1200=1200
