Question 58 - Use the expressions from Exercise 57. Write and solve an equation to find the temperature at which the gap decreases to 9.4mm.

57) the temperature rise is the increase from 10º, so the new temperature (t) MINUS the 10º gives the rise __ t-10

the decrease in the gap is .37mm for each degree of temperature rise, so the decrease would be .37(t-10)

the new width is the old width MINUS the decrease __ 16.8-[.37(t-10)]


58) 9.4=16.8-[.37(t-10)] __ 9.4=16.8-.37t+3.7 __ subtracting 16.8+3.7 __ -11.1=-.37t

dividing by -.37 __ 30=t
