Question 159791: thier are rabits and chiken in the farrm. then the farmer count all his animals and resulted with a sum100 (counting both heads and feets). how many animals chicken and rabits are thier?
Answer by ptaylor(2198)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=number of rabbits
And y=number of chickens
Now we are told that:
5x+3y=100 or
3y=100-5x
y=(100-5x)/3-------------------------------------eq1
Now we know the following about this problem:
(1) We can't have fractional parts of rabbits or chickens---we deal in whole numbers
(2) We can't have negative rabbits or chickens
(3) We can't have zero rabbits or chickens (if we have zero chickens, we have fractional rabbits and if we have zero rabbits, we have fractional chickens)
From eq1, the number of rabbits has to be less than 20, otherwise we either have negative rabbits or zero rabbits. So now we start trial and error:
Looking at eq1, we see that:
if x=2 then y=30
if x=5 then y=25
if x=8 then y=20
if x=11 then y=15
if x=14 then y=10
if x=17 then y=5
SPOT CK
if x=8, then y=20
8*5+20*3=100
40+60=100
100=100
if x=2 then y=30
5*2+3*30=100
10+90=100
100=100
etc.
So, we have lots of answers on this one which is not uncommon when we have more unknowns than equations.
Hope this helps---ptaylor
