The sum of 5 times a number and -2, added to nine times a number.
.
Looking at the first part:
The sum of '5 times a number' and '-2'
we get
5x + (-2)
or
5x - 2
.
The above is then "added to nine times a number" to get:
5x - 2 + 9x
Combining x's we get:
14x - 2

Take it piece by piece:
5 times a number, rewrite as 5x
plus -2, nothing to rewrite there, that's already simplified,
added to nine times a number, rewrite as 9x.
Now, rewrite as an equation:
5x-2+9x = (See, it already looks better!)
Now combine like terms:
5x + 9x -2= 14x - 2
