Question 154743: I can't seem to figure this problem out. The answer is probably staring me in the face.
Please help me solve this equation: During construction, carpenters often brace walls. The appropriate length of the brace is given by the formula . If a carpenter nails a 10-foot brace to the wall 6 feet above the floor, how far from the base of the wall should he nail the brace to the floor?

During construction, carpenters often brace walls.
The appropriate length of the brace is given by the formula L= sqrt(f^2+h^2) . If a carpenter nails a 10-foot brace to the wall 6 feet above the floor, how far from the base of the wall should he nail the brace to the floor?
----------------------------------------------------------
Draw the picture.
You should see a right triangle with hypotenuse = 10 and height = 6.
Solve for the base length.
base = sqrt[10^2- 6^2]
base = sqrt[64] = 8
-------------------------
Ans: 8 ft. from the base of the vertical wall.
