Question 153259: Could you please help me with some word problems my teacher has assigned? We were told these were not directly from a math book.
A salesman made a trip of 375 miles by bus and train. He traveled 3 hours by bus and 4 hours by train. If the train is 15 mph faster than the bus, how fast did he travel on each?
I was thinking it was: 375=4x+15 and 375=3x I just get so confused on these problems. Could you help me please?
THank you in advance.

A salesman made a trip of 375 miles by bus and train. He traveled 3 hours by bus and 4 hours by train. If the train is 15 mph faster than the bus, how fast did he travel on each?
:
Let s = speed of the bus
then
(s+15) = speed of the train
:
Write a distance equation: Dist = time * speed
;
Bus dist + train dist = 375 mile
3s + 4(s+15) = 375
:
3s + 4s + 60 = 375
:
7s = 375 - 60
:
7s = 315
s =
s = 45 mph is the bus, then obviously, the train is 60 mph
:
Checks solution by finding the dist of each
3(45) + 4(60) =
135 + 240 = 375
:
:
That wasn't so confusing, was it?
