He knows that one recipe of cream will cover 54 square inches of cake. How many batches of the topping must he make to complete his torte? (Use  = 3.14 as an approximate value)

9*3.14*4^2=452.16 IN^2 FOR ALL 9 LAYERS.
452.16/54=8.37 BATHCHES OF TOPPING WILL BE REQUIRED.

Remember, the area of a circle is

.
Since the cake is 8" in diameter, the radius is 4"
The area of one layer of cake is:

= 50.24 sq inches
.
Since there are eight layers:
8 * 50.24 = 401.92
.
Each recipe can cover 54 sq inches therefore,
401.92/54 = 7.44 batches
or
8 batches (if he can't make a partial batch)
