: I'm not sure where to put this question... hopefully I'm in the right spot.
A whole number increased by its square is 5 times itself minus 4. Find the number.
What I figured thus far(not sure if I'm right):
x+x^2=5x-4
4=5x-x-x^2
4=4x-x^2

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A whole number increased by its square is 5 times itself minus 4. Find the number.
What I figured thus far(not sure if I'm right):
x+x^2=5x-4
Good!
x^2-4x+4 = 0
(x-2)(x-2) = 0
x = 2
---------------
Checking:
2 + 2^2 = 5*2 - 4
6 = 10-4
6 = 6
