Question 145008: Solve:
Jim drove 196 miles in 4 hours. If he can keep the same pace, how long will it take him to drive 1078 miles?
I think you use the formula D=R/T where D=196 miles, R=4 hours and we need to solve for T? but I am not sure. Please help!

You missed it by THAT much.

In the first place, the formula is , that is: distance equals rate times time. But you need to know the rate, so you need to solve for , so simply divide both sides by to get . Now you can take the distance you are given and divide it by the time you are given to get the rate.

The next thing you need to do is rearrange the formula again, this time solving for . Divide both sides of by to get . Now you can divide the new, longer distance by the rate you calculated in the first part of the problem to calculate the time required to go the longer distance.
