let x=Democrats

"316 people had voted in an election" __ 316-x=Republicans

"Republican boters was 6 more than 2/3 the number of Democrats" __ (2/3)x+6

316-x=(2/3)x+6 __ multiplying by 3 __ 948-3x=2x+18

adding 3x-18 __ 930=5x __ dividing by 5 __ 186=x
