Question 132075: I have two problems that are stumping me. Please help
1. Miguel's insurance company will replace his care if repair costs exceed 80% of the cars value. The car recently sustained $9600 worth of damage, but it was not replaced. What is the value of his car?
a. greater than or equal to 12000
b. less than $12000
c. more than $7680
d. 120000
Is D correct?

2. Two angles are complementary. The sum of the measure of the first angle and half the second angle is 79. Find the measures of the angles. What is the measure of the smaller angle? what is the measure of the other angle?

Answer by Photonjohn(42)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1. The answer is b. 80% of $12,000 is $9,600. If the car is worth less than $12,000, $9,600 will be greater than 80%. Answer d is exactly 80% which is not less.
2. Let x and y be the complementary angles. then
x + y = 90
x + y/2 = 79
Solving the 2 equations and 2 unknowns yields
x = 90 - y
substituting for x in the 2nd equation yields
90 - y + y/2 = 79
90 - y/2 = 79
y/2 = 11
y = 22
then from x + y = 90,
x + 22 = 90
x = 68
the two angles are 68 and 22 degrees.
