Tom had some toy cars 2/5 of them were red. He has 35 more green cars than red cars.
The remaining 15 cars are yellow. How many cars does he have?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let x be the number of all toy cars Tom has (the quantity under the problem's question).
Then 2/5 of this amount,  or    are red cars;
        are green cars and 15 cars are yellow.
We add everything together and obtain this equation for the total
     +  + 15 = x.
The setup is complete.  It is your equation to solve.
To find x, simplify this equation
     +  +  = x
     + 50 = x
    50 = x -
    50 =
    x = 5*50 = 250.
ANSWER.  The total number of toy cars Tom has is 250.
As is nearly always the case, there are numerous ways to set up this problem for solving. The other tutor showed one of them.
Here is another....
Given the information that 2/5 of the cars are red....
Let 2x = # of red cars
Then 5x = total # of cars
He has 35 more green cars than red:
2x+35 = # of green cars
The remaining 15 cars are yellow.
That means red plus green plus yellow equals total:
ANSWER: The (total) number of cars he has is 5x = 5(50) = 250
r, g, y stand for red, green, yellow
c, how many cars total
but this can be cut down to just one variable.
250 cars
