Question 1207382: Going into the final exam, which will count as two-thirds of the final grade,Mike has test scores of 86,80,84,and 90.What score does Mike need on the final in order to earn a B,which requires an average score of 80? What does he need to earn an A,which requires an average of 90?

Let me see.

Let x = grade needed on final exam to earn a B.

(86 + 80 + 84 + 90 + x)/5 = 80

Let y = grade needed on final exam to earn an A.

(86 + 80 + 84 + 90 + y)/5 = 90

Is this correct?

WOW! A final exam counting for 2/3 of the grade for the course? Scary....

The average of his four test scores is

To get a B, his overall average has to be 80. That is 5 points below the average of his test scores. The final exam counts for 2/3 of the total grade, which means it counts for twice as much as his current test average. So his score on the final exam has to be 5/2 = 2.5 points below 80 -- i.e., 77.5.

ANSWER #1: to get a B (average of 80), his score on the final exam needs to be 77.5

Similarly, to get an A in the course he needs an average of 90; his current test score average is 5 points below 90, so his score on the final exam needs to be 5/2 = 2.5 points above 90.

ANSWER #2: to get a A (average of 90), his score on the final exam needs to be 92.5

Going into the final exam, which will count as two-thirds of the final grade,
Mike has test scores of 86,80,84,and 90.What score does Mike need on the final
in order to earn a B,which requires an average score of 80? What does he need to
earn an A,which requires an average of 90?
For the final exam to count 2/3, to figure his score for the course, Mike must
add his final exam grade 2 times and his test average only 1 time and divide by
3.

Let his required final exam grade be x

His test average is

His score for the course =

 to get a B

 to get an A
