When a problem of this type says that  N  varies jointly as the square root of  "p",
it is usually assumed that  p  is non-negative real number - then the real value    does exist.

With negative  "p"  (as  -4  in your question),  square root of negative  "p"  does not exist as a real number.

Therefore,  your problem,  as it is posed in the post,  does not make sense.
