Question 1205309: A path is to be constructed using bricks. The bricks are in 5 stacks of 9 bricks high, 9 wide, and 4 deep. One brick covers 32 sq. in. All but 1 dozen bricks are used.
Determine length (feet) of path.
22 * 5 = 110 total bricks.
110 - 12 = 98 used.
32 sq. in. = .222 sq. ft.

Unsure how to solve.

you were not being given enough information to solve this without making assumption that were not in the original problem description.
if the bricks are rectangular, then some possible dimensions are:
1 by 32
2 by 16
4 by 8
if the bricks are circular, then the dimensions would be solved as follows:
32 = pi * r^2
solve for r^2 to get r^2 = 10.18591636 square inches.
solve for r to get r = 3.191538243 inches.
solve for d to get d = 2 * r = 6.303076486 inches.
you simply cannot solve for the length of the path if you don't know the dimensions of the bricks.
are they lined up one after the other?
are they lined up one after the other in pairs of bricks wide?
there's no way to determine the length of the path without knowing the shape and dimensions of the bricks and how they are to be lined up to make the path.
that's what i think.

You are not reading the given information correctly.

There are 5 stacks of bricks. Each stack consists of bricks stacked in piles 9 bricks wide, 9 bricks high, and 4 bricks deep. The total number of bricks is 5*9*9*4 = 1620. The number of bricks used is 1620-12 = 1608.

Presumably the bricks are rectangular; otherwise they aren't going to make a good path.

But knowing only the area covered by each brick, we can only determine the total area covered by the 1608 bricks; we can't determine the length of the path without more information.
