A post office sold twice as many 30 cent stamps as 60 cent. The number of 5 cent stamps was 6 more than the number of 60 cents stamps. If the value of the stamps was $8.85 how many 5 cent stamps were sold.
Textbook solution was 9 my solution was 6.84 which does not make sense.

Your answer is right -- so either the problem is faulty or you have copied the numbers wrong.

let x = # of 60-cent stamps
then 2x = # of 30-cent stamps
and x+6 = # of 5-cent stamps

The total value was $8.85 = 885 cents:
