There are many different ways to solve this problem using formal algebra. All of them involve solving a system of equations in two variables by in some way eliminating one of the variables.
Probably the two most common methods are elimination and substitution.
But for this particular problem, because of the way the information is given, my preferred method is as follows.
Here is what the given information tells us:
3j+2s=80.55
2j+3s=75.95
The two pieces of given information tell us that if we buy 1 fewer Japan tickets and 1 more Switzerland ticket the total price goes down by $4.60. Note that means the price is $4.60 more in Japan than in Switzerland.
Let's start with the second piece of given information and continue swapping a Japan ticket for a Switzerland ticket.
2j+3s=75.95
1j+4s=75.95-4.60=71.35
0j+5s=71.35-4.60=66.75
5s=66.75
I have eliminated one of the variables by a non-standard algebraic process.
So the price of a ticket in Switzerland is $66.75/5 = $13.35.
And that means the price of a ticket in Japan is $13.35+$4.60 = $17.95.
ANSWERS: Japan $17.95; Switzerland $13.35
