Question 117865: SOLVE AND CHECK
HOW DO I SET THIS UP
THE LENGTH OF A RECTANGULAR GARDEN IS 1 FT. MORE THAN 2 TIMES ITS WIDTH. IF THE PERIMETER OF THE GARDENIS 44 FT, FIND BOTH DIMESIONS OF THE GARDEN.

Answer by rapaljer(4671)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Before I begin, I have an ENTIRE explanation of this type of word problem both as a lesson plan in algebra.com, and also on my own website. Try clicking on my tutor name, which is "rapaljer" anywhere in algebra.com. Then on my homepage, look for "MATH IN LIVING COLOR", go to "Basic Algebra" and look for Chapter 1 the sections on WORD PROBLEMS!!

Now, to solve your problem, you need to let x= the quantity at the end of the first sentence or phrase. In this case, let x= width of the rectangle. Then, since the width is x, and the length is "1 more than 2 times the width", this means that the length = 2x+1

Let x= width
2x+1 = length

Perimeter consists of TWO widths and TWO lengths, and it equals 44.
2(_____) + 2(______) = 44
2(x) + 2(2x+1) = 44
2x+4x + 2 = 44
6x + 2 = 44
6x= 42
x=7 = width
2x+1 = 2(7) + 1 =15 = length

Check:
2(7) + 2(15)
14+ 30
44 It checks

R^2
