SETTING UP A TABLE THIS PROBLEM CAN BE SOLVED BY THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE.
START BY ASSIGNING MULTIPLES OF 10 TO THE DIMES COLUMN ADDING 3 TIMES THE NUMBER OF NICKLES AND SUBTRATING THESE TOTALS FROM 85 & MULTIPLYING THIS COUNT BY .25 TO SEE IF THIS TOTAL=6.25:
NUMBER OF COINS---------85----85
NUMBER OF QUARTERS----45-----5
NUMBER OF DIMES=X------10----20
NUMBER OF NICKLES=3X--30----60
TOTAL AMOUNT----------14.25--6.25
THUS WE HAVE 85 COINS (5*.25+20*.10=60*.5=6.25)
ANSWER: 5 QUARTERS, 20 DIMES & 60 NICKLES.
