Question 1169232: Hi
Bob had 80% more money than jim. Sandra had 40% less than jim. Bob and jim gave sandra some money in the ratio of 3:2 respectively. In the end sandra had twice as much money as before. Given that Bob had $144 more than sandra in the end,how much did each have at first.
Thanks

Answer by Boreal(15235)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Jim is x
Bob is 1.8x
Sandra is 0.6x
Jim gives 2y and Bob gives 3y; they are now x-2y and 1.8x-3y
and Sandra is now 5y+0.6x, and that equals 1.2x
So 0.6x=5y and y=0.12x
-
Jim has x-2(0.12)x=0.76x
Bob has 1.44x, losing 0.36x
Sandra has 1.2x
1.2x+144=1.44x
0.24x=144
x=$600 for Jim
1.8x=$1080 for Bob
0.6x=$360 for Sandra. That is the answer
---
Proof
since y=0.12x, y= $72
Jim gave $144 and Bob $216
Sandra now has $720
Bob has $1080-$216=$864, which is $144 more than Sandra
