How many sweets did each have at the start?
Thanks
Answer by VFBundy(438) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Bill's sweets at start = x
Ben's sweets at start = y
2/7(x) = 2/3(y)
y - 120 = 1/4(2/7(x))
Simplify equations:
2/7(x) = 2/3(y)
y - 120 = 1/14(x)
2/7(x) - 2/3(y) = 0
-1/14(x) + y = 120
Multiply second equation by 2/3:
2/7(x) - 2/3(y) = 0
-1/21(x) + 2/3(y) = 80
Add both equations together:
5/21(x) = 80
Solve for x:
x = 80(21/5)
x = 336
Now that we know x = 336, we can plug this into any previous equation to find out what y equals.
2/7(x) = 2/3(y)
2/7(336) = 2/3(y)
96 = 2/3(y)
y = 96(3/2)
y = 144
Bill's sweets at start = x = 336
Ben's sweets at start = y = 144
