Let X be the value under the question, in dollars.


Then from the condition you have this equation for the personal contributions


     -  = 3.75   dollars.


To solve it, multiply by 40 both sides.  You will get


    8X - 5X = 3.75*40

    3X      = 150

     X      = 150/3 = 50 dollars.


ANSWER.  The total contribution was 50 dollars.

         Each of 5 members was going to pay   = 10 dollars.
